I had the same experience while installing the Karmic alpha 6 Ubuntu
version.

After the complete install process, the normal Window with the hint to
reboot the system appears.

When hitting the reboot butten, the system does NOT shut down clearly,
but repeatedly shows the terminal window (but with enlarged font) for a
fraction of a second, then shows a black screen, then again the terminal
with the enlarged font.

It was too fast for me to make a snapshot (installing on VirtualBox)
[perhaps I'm to old for this task or my PC is to fast for me <g>]

Therefore the screen with the hint to take out the installation CD did
NOT appear. and after 6 or seven rounds I gave up.

After switching off, the boot is normal - except for the error messages
described in BUG #430272
