Public bug reported: The courier-mta package failed to install (so for now I switched back to postfix as an mta). Parallel to the install attempt, I got the following on syslog and mail.log: Sep 16 21:28:15 berlin courierfilter: /var/run/courier/courierfilter.pid: Permission denied Sep 16 21:28:16 berlin courierfilter: /var/run/courier/courierfilter.pid: Permission denied Sep 16 21:28:31 berlin courierfilter: /var/run/courier/courierfilter.pid: Permission denied
As courier runs as root, this looks strange.
