Thanks for your reply and suggestions. I regret to have to report that, 
having found an unorthodox solution already, I was unable to apply them. 
Being an impatient beginner I removed the HDD from the laptop (Acer 
Aspire 3630) on which the Jaunty installation failed and put it in 
another laptop (HP Pavilion DV5000) where I at an earlier date succeeded 
with the Jaunty installation. This time it succeeded again and when I 
put back te Acer's HDD in the Acer, things worked. After starting in 
recovery mode, followed bij repair of broken packeges and fsck, 
everything worked perfectly.
Anyway, thanks very much for your help.
