Hy! I've had the same problem. I was trying to install the ubuntu server edition on my Mac mini (PPC) and during the installation I've encountered a problem. My Apple keyboard was set to Croatian layout and for some unknown reason it did not work. There was no way for me to set user name and password.
I solved that problem by setting my keyboard to US english and reconfiguring it later on. This should do.
