Basic info about your system would help. That includes dmesg, xorg.0.log and lspci -vvvnn as attachments to bug report. SysRq magic keys could help you get to console login. (Alt Gr+SysRq+k to kill the "dead" xserver.)
I just had same symptoms and I was browsing if bug was reported. But the causes is nvidia binary driver for me. Also for future easiest way to report bugs is to use ubnutu-bug command. It will automaticaly collect relevant info and add to bug reports. Usage is ubuntu-bug <package which has problems>.
