Well, you can also do like I did : I went back to a previous version of ubuntu more stable. As far as I am concerned, my Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS - KDE is very stable, but doesn't provide any Kwin effects neither desktop applets but it works, and very well besides !!
I'm waiting the 9.10 version to try another time.
