Confirming. Issue appeared with KMS introduction and temporary gone until 2.6.31-6 (including). Later versions (2.6.31-7 till 2.6.31-10) required nomodeset or i915.modeset=0 to boot normally. In my case, I suspect system never passed initrd stage since there is no response from network and keyboard, and there is no other console to debug it :-(
On other hand there is no issue on Atom based PC with same GPU.
