I tried this using the trunk version of matplotlib using Helvetica for the font, and encountered no problems with the pdf backend (though the Agg backend didn't seem to work). Is pdflatex or any of the dvi-to-pdf converters able to create a pdf file from TeX source containing umlauted characters in your special font?
