My testing was in 9.04, so it's possible this has been fixed in Karmic. I'm certain that I did not boot from the CD instead of the USB disk, because I don't have any 9.04 CDs. I made the USB disk from an ISO, and tried to eject an unrelated data CD that was in the drive when I booted up the system.
