I've done a few more tests and the behaviour remains consistent. I tried booting without my usb wireless card to see if that made a difference, but it seemed the same.
I followed the instructions for suspend from text mode (doing sudo pm- suspend at the text console - ie Ctrl-Alt-F1) and no output was displayed at all.
