Public bug reported:

Not sure if this is exactly a bug - in short, my system crashed while Synaptic
was installing Gnome and XFCE. I didn't think to select the session type when
trying to log back in, and had some difficulty getting KDE started. A thorough
explanation is below.
Upon getting Kubuntu Feisty Fawn RC3 installed, I opened Adept Manager to
install Synaptic (which is always the first thing I do when installing
Kubuntu). I clicked Full Upgrade and there was a dialog saying a new release of
the distribution was available, and to click Next to upgrade to it. Upon
clicking Next, this window as well as Adept closed immediately. I repeated this
process a couple times, eventually deciding to just install Synaptic and get
things rolling.
I opened Synaptic and clicked Full Upgrade, and didn't any message resembling
the one I saw in Adept. It just showed me the list of packages to be installed
and updated as normal. I then proceeded to mark a rather large number of
packages for installation, among them fglrx, gnome-core, xfce4, nicotine,
audacity, nfs-common, nfs-kernel-server, and several dozen theme items
(kwin-baghira, gtk2-geramik, etc.). The total disk space to be used for the
installation of everything was between 400 and 500 megabytes. I clicked Apply
and opened System Settings to set up my keyboard shortcuts. After setting them
all up, I clicked Apply (Weary of a crash, I did this several times throughout
the process).
I pressed my hotkey for the launch menu (Alt+Z), and the launch menu came up.
After that, I was unable to do anything. The mouse cursor moved, but hovering
over buttons and menu entries gave no visual feedback; I also moved the cursor
to the top-left corner (my panel hotspot), but the panel didn't appear. It
appeared that Synaptic was still doing its thing, as the activity light on my
computer remained lit. I decided to wait until it appeared to be finished,
which took about 10 minutes, then restarted my X server via Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.
I was returned to the KDM login screen; I then tried to log back in. A few
seconds after entering my password, roughly 30 pixels width of the panel
briefly appeared and disappeared (I have it set to 100% length), then nothing.
No splash screen, no wallpaper, nothing-- just a mouse cursor I couldn't do
anything with. After repeating this process, I Ctrl+Alt+F1'd into a terminal
and ran "startkde." It gave me a long list of errors (roughly appearing to be
the same type of errors I see whenever I start any graphical program from the
terminal), then said KDE has been started. I Ctrl+Alt+F7'd and found things the
same as when I went to the terminal. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace again, log back in,
same thing. Ctrl+Alt+F1, sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get upgrade, no packages
to be installed/upgraded. nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf, Ctrl+X, ran the command to
reset my xorg.conf back to original settings. Repeated the logging into nothing
process. Then it finally occurred to me that I may need to select the session
type. I tried logging into a Gnome session, success. Logged back out, logged
into a KDE session without any problems.
