My experience was a little different. I'm running jaunty 2.6.28-15-generic on a Lenovo tp60. No complaints appeared in any log, but /dev/ttySL0 never appeared, and the daemon doesn't actually run, apparently. I attempted to reinstall using module-assistant, and it said it would not install because user Slmodemd already existed. It also said that a log file (it gave a path somewhere in /var) would explain more, but there was no such log file. Experimenting, I removed Slmodemd user (deluser), and ran m-a again. What followed was a segmentation fault message, followed by a hard crash -- the kind where nothing happens until you turn the machine off.
