You can always configure pam_group locally if you need to, but this is
something we cannot configure by default. And, why is it so difficult
to manage /etc/groups in LDAP as well, if you already have all the
other information in LDAP? Having a centralized group membership LDAP
db in your case seems by far the most robust and flexible solution to
me.
