Same Problem in Jaunty 9.04. i m using kubuntu (clean install). found that the problem only occurs only when i use the "sudo" command in terminal and. sometimes only if i use sudo kate or sudo dolphin etc or similar commands. screen goes completely black with only the cursor on display. no problem when usplash is dsabled in menu.lst but i like usplash and didn't disable it... sudo shutdown works too but its irritating to type to shutdown.
