Steve Dodier: the crash isn't happening anymore with the new file. Now here's what's interesting. I tried the regular xfce4-volumed one more time before I did all this, and sure enough it segfaulted. Now after I merely did "make" and ran the new ./src/xfce4-volumed, the other xfce4-volumed was fixed too. I never copied the fixed one into my system. Let me know if you want any other info.
The only thing I did was "sudo apt-get build-dep xfce4-volumed" but I don't think that caused the old one to start working. After reboot, it still works flawlessly. Looks like the new file updated some permanent setting. It did say "New card : CMediaCMI8768Alsamixer ". a...@bloomfield:~/Compile/xfce4-volumed$ ./src/xfce4-volumed XCB: RaiseVolume ok, keycode=123 mod=0x0000 XCB: RaiseVolume ok, keycode=123 mod=0x0000 XCB: RaiseVolume ok, keycode=123 mod=0x0000 XCB: LowerVolume ok, keycode=122 mod=0x0000 XCB: LowerVolume ok, keycode=122 mod=0x0000 XCB: LowerVolume ok, keycode=122 mod=0x0000 XCB: Mute ok, keycode=121 mod=0x0000 XCB: Mute ok, keycode=121 mod=0x0000 XCB: Mute ok, keycode=121 mod=0x0000 ** (<unknown>:14181): WARNING **: The card set in xfconf could not be found. ** (<unknown>:14181): WARNING **: The xfconf property /active-card has been defaulted to CMediaCMI8768Alsamixer. ** (<unknown>:14181): WARNING **: There is no xfconf track, trying the first Master track of the card. ** (<unknown>:14181): WARNING **: There is no Master track either, trying the first track of the card.
