Exactly the same issue for me, when a freeze occurs, the mouse still works very slowly. With keyboard, alt+Syst+B is working and the system reboot, but alt+Syst+K is failing and let the system freeze totally, with some 'visual noise' on the screen.
The system seems to be freezing really often with applications that are dealing with network/internet. I upgraded the file system to Ext4 when upgraded Intrepid to Jaunty.
