The GNOME bugreport is mentionind Evolution version 2.24 and is quite old. Anyway, my problem existed for only one of my two IMAP accounts I am using in evolution. After "evolution --force-shutdown", deleting all the mails in .evolution/mail/imap/<AFFECTED_ACCOUNT> and restarting evolution again the problem seems to have vanished.
I still do not know what has caused the issue.
