I have a very similar problem but some details differ. Karmic Alpha 3 Live CD boots by default into 800x600 (monitor is 1280x1024). If I turn off KMS, by using kernel boot option 'i915.modeset=0', then it boots to correct 1280x1024. (although there are log entries saying that this option is 'ignored' - perhaps it means KMS is ignored?) Splash screen always has resolution 1280x1024 in either case.
