I've tried to debug this further, and I'm pretty sure that if- up.d/mountnfs isn't run at all when 'ifup -a' is run in rcS.d/S40networking:

ESC[80G ^MESC[74G[ OK ] notice that I've put 'set -x' in the mountnfs -script, which is shown only when loopback is ifup'd. This is with feisty.
