I lost sound after performing updates on a new 9.10 alpha 3 install. I believe I have the same audio controller:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02) I was able to get my sound to work (in both headphones and speakers) by changing "Sound Preferences" -> "Output" -> "Connector" to Analog Headphones (from Analog Output).
