I'm having similar issues on karmic alpha 4's 2.6.31-5-generic kernel. Choppiness is so bad you don't see a cube or rotation, just a distorted choppy screen then the next desktop comes up. Acer 7730 laptop with Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07).
