I'm having the same problem. I'm running Karmic Alpha 3 on a Vaio T-130. The effects worked fine after install. In the "Appearance" I deactivated the effects and now can't activate them anymore, at least not through the "Appearance" dialog.
Like Asif and Jeremy I can get the effects back running compiz --replace but after a shutdown/reboot effects don't work again.
