I just had this yet again when we had a power failure. I use an NFS home dir, which houses the profile. Ubuntu 9.04 with Ubuntu supplied Firefox 3.0.13
To fix it, I tried the method listed above of copying the profile and pointing the profiles.ini to the new dir.
