Yes, this is a problem with the radeon driver's compositing and IXP SB4x0. For me sometimes with this setup the sound would be crunchy and messed up, and some other times the sound wouldn't come up at all. Only solution to this problem as for now AFAIK is to turn off compositing (System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects -> 'None'), and restarting the system.
