I confirm the following behaviour: when I start totem, or drop a new
video/audio file into it, or when it switches between files via its
playlist, or when it finishes playing, it reduces the system volume,
sometimes to zero. You can see the levels changing by watching an
alsamixer window.

If you then click on totem's volume icon so that the volume level
indicator appears, totem usually restores the volume (without you having
to touch the level indicator).

VLC and Rhythmbox DON'T exhibit this behaviour.

This is with:

* totem 2.27.2-0ubuntu2
* pulseaudio 1:0.9.16~test4-0ubuntu4
* kernel 2.6.31-5-generic

and the audio device is:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio
Controller (rev 02) (SigmaTel STA9228 codec).
