I see the same behaviour (same error message), with Ubuntu 9.04 and OpenOffice.Org 3.0.1. Just as in Sam Liddicott's case my home directory is NFS-mounted, and removing the .openoffice.org directories solved it. Also, the server hosting the home directories ran out of disk space recently, at a time when OpenOffice was running. So I strongly suspect there is corruption of some type in the .openoffice.org directory, removing that causes OpenOffice to recreate it and everything works smoothly.
