I would suggest to remove menu applet from the panel when not in use. and add it when needed. Or, like me, to remove it from panel and add it to it every few days if machine is used interactively for a long time and not restarted. Also you can turn on "Show desktop menu on right click" in desktop preferences, to get program menu right clicking of desktop, instead of letting it leak when active all the time.
