I am not agree with you. I cannot do a dist-upgrade without pulseaudio pacakge to be installed in addition. The only way to do it now is to fixed the gnome-settings-daemon. I don't know exactly what is inside it but perhaps that will be a good idea to separate the different component and put pulseaudio stuff in a specific package. I know that I not the only one who doesn't want to have pulseaudio. For me the reason is really simple: skype (my wife and my son are at 6000 km and it's the only software really working for VOIP). Don't give me a link to configure it it's not working on my computer I already try or I have to cut all other applications from the sound server. The only good things with pulseaudio is the bluetooth connection (I cannot see any other interesting things from it) but as skype is not working fine with pulseaudio it's useless.
