Another note of interest is that when you insert valid media, it is listed in gio. When you insert empty media, it is not.
To those for whom brasero works flawlessly now, it would be very helpful for you to run this program. And it would also be interesting if brasero doesn't work for you but the test program lists your drives when there's empty media inside it.
