ok - latest Karmic (as of July 30th) -- all updates applied -- and I enabled the sideport memory -- no it suspends and resumes!! First-time- ever-in-Ubuntu-without-doing-anything-special. Wow. I'll try again and if it works a second time then - wow, just wow!
