I realized that my DVD drive was not using the latest firmware, so I upgraded from LL0A to LL0D. This did not solve the problem.
I received an official Ubuntu CD from the ShipIt service, and I am getting the same errors that I was getting with my burned CD. I tested my official Ubuntu CD on a second computer with a different drive (Samsung CD-R/RW SW-248F), and the LiveCD validates using the "Check disc for defects" option.
