Hello Nice to hear that you haven't forgotten about the issue. This issue was resolved with ubuntu 8.10+. However since 8.04 is a LTS it might be of interest for people running it. I therefore did a 8.04 installation on a clean harddrive. Same problem still exist.
Since 8.04 have got an updated release i also tried 8.04.3. The result was much better. Installation worked out of the box without adding any pci=nomsi to the kernel. However the following things are still an issue. * nvidia-glx-new that is installed by hardware detection is of version 169.12 that don't support the on board nvidia 8200gfx chipset. After reboot system will end up with a blank screen. This can be resolved by installing nvidia-glx-new-envy that uses 173 driver. Just run apt-get install nvidia-glx-new-envy followed by nvidia- xconfig * Sound driver is still crappy. You get sparkling sound when playing audio I tried to install KernelMainlineBuilds. But they suffer from the same problem that ubuntu 8.04.1 kernel suffer from. The sata controller is not supported so pci=nomsi is needed. Kernel vanilla greater than 2.6.25 is needed. Ubuntu 8.04 don't have apport-collect so I was not able to extract the requested information.
