Public bug reported: All forms of Synaptic (Update Manager, Synaptic, Add/Remove Programs) hang because the password prompt is never shown. The only way I have been able to run update-manager is to open Terminal and to execute sudo update-manager. Then updates complete successfully. If I launch update- manager from the menu it acts like it is going to execute (shows progress bar) but never has progress. Synaptic opens but never displays packages. Both apps must be killed to stop them.
