Not sure if there was a change in the defaults, or versions of OpenJDK, but I switched to the sun JDK, and do not receive this error anymore. Simply modified the /usr/bin/azureus script after installing the Sun JDK. Modified the JAVA variable to point to the sun executable, and all was well.
