Finally it worked :-) The key was to tell me to change "via" to "openchrome". The instructions say to change vesa, and there was none. Also, there are several Device sections in the xorg.conf file, so I never knew which to change.
And I guess the version got updates since July 7 also. If not, the installation instructions on the OpenChrome page are wrong.
