I can confirm that version 1.6.5.git20061014.ac1-1ubuntu4 does not work with my Intel DG965WH motherboard either. However, I grabbed the current version of the modesetting driver from freedesktop.org git per https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8706 which got the display working, but with a bad resolution.
I applied the patch mentioned here https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9680 and I now have working a 1680x1050 display.
