Immediate repair of issue by uninstalling ubunutone-client sudo apt-get remove ubuntuone-client - removes ubuntuone-client-gnome as well.
I suspected this application was the culprit before this. I killed the primary process and the 'daemon' that also ran assuming that if they were active on the system it wouldn't affect the system. This didn't work. I would also add that whatever happens affects the desktop. I run conky and when the segfault happens it wipes the icons off the desktop and elevates (lack of a better description) the conky window to a foreground window. Other applications display behind the conky panel. Not sure it's of any value to know that.
