OK - I have reinstalled and installed updates. I updated in 3 stages: 1. Non-kernel updates 2. Kernel updates without restricted drivers 3. Restricted driver modules
1. made no difference - wireless network was still OK (expected) 2. wireless didn't work - this was expected as the wl driver for the Broadcom 4312 is restricted 3. wireless still worked. So after reinstalling and updating there isn't a problem (subject to more testing but it has rebooted and seems OK) Differences this time are: 1. XP is still installed on a partition so the location on disk is different (so what?) 2. I installed the kernel updates before restricted driver updates - maybe there is an update installation ordering problem or an update has changed in the week or so since I last did this. I'll update if anything changes but for now its OK. -- After upgrading to 9.04 broadcom wireless no longer connects and firefox and graphics behaving strangely, everything worked fine with 8.10.
