Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid sometimes my system will stop playing back any sounds
and the system will require a reboot. This can happen during VLC playback
(rarely) but will usually happen when the computer is idle for a while.
Sometimes it takes 10 days and sometimes 1, so I haven't been able to find a
definite timeout.

I have run, ubuntu-bug -p alsa-base and also ran alsa-info.sh script to
provide extra data.
