I confirm that this affects my Compaq Evo n800v as well - polling was disabled. Running: $ sudo sh -c 'echo 5 > /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ1/polling_frequency' enabled polling which seemed to cause the fan to ramp up properly. My dmesg output also contains: ACPI: Looking for DSDT ... not found!
I never noticed this problem on Dapper.
