Public bug reported:

When I have my laptop plugged into an external monitor via a VGA cable,
I'm able to mirror the screen correctly in the "Screen Resolution"
preferences in Gnome. When I close the laptop lid, the external monitor
goes dark. However, I then unplugged the VGA cable from the laptop and
opened it up again but the screen is still dark. I believe it is still
trying to use the VGA connector for the display. Is it technically
possible for it to recognize that the VGA has been unplugged and then
switch back to the normal laptop screen again?
