Thanks for keeping us updated on this issue. I'm going to refer you to
the hal people for help since this seems to be a polling issue maybe
with hald-addon-storage. I've seen them before, although not with those
drives. In the meantime, try installing another drive if you can find a
spare and make sure that it is the CD-ROM drive that is the issue, not
the controller or any of the supporting hardware.
