Could you please open a terminal, type 'tail -n 0 -f ~/.xsession-errors' and then click the tray icon and see if any messages are printed? Maybe this will give a clue. For reasons beyond me, MN tries to launch a terminal to open thunderbird in my configuration. But since I have terminator set as the default terminal emulation, terminator simply prints an error message (to .xsession-errors) and quits, since it doesn't understand the '-c' argument that NM passes (presumably 'terminator -c thunderbird').
