@gidantribal, no, that would require to know what to change. So far I know the 
in the working kernels, there was a GFX0 object in /proc/acpi/video (and likely 
that hat the brightness control). The acpidump shows that there should be the 
required methods to detect the brightness control (although the method to 
return the brightness levels is incorrect as it omits the definitions for the 
ac and battery brightness). So I created kernel packages that will print more 
debug messages.You can find them at: http://people.ubuntu.com/~smb/bug333386/
I tried to supply a modified DSDT but re-compilation of the disassembled DSDT 
fails for some strange reason.
