This bug was found during an upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10, so probably doesn't apply to 9.04. At the time I was reporting so it could be fixed for others doing this same upgrade. I have since upgraded to 9.04 without VLC problems, so assume this has been fixed in later releases.
