I proposed in ayatana an alternative: instead of an icon, put some text there. Like it is done by default for FUSA (fast user-switch applet). Then you can turn it into an icon if you need space. Like it is done for FUSA. But in that case you see the icon in the configuration dialog so you know what it is.
