I get a similar error when I try to use KDENlive. If I run the program from a command line as sudo then I can connect to the camera. When I do this, however, the capture crashes after it is initialized and starts. This also happens with my webcam, though, and was also an issue with the webcam before I attempted a capture.
For now, a suitable workaround for some users may be to run the program as SUDO.
