I have the same problems on Kubuntu Jaunty (amd64). I found this old Debian bug, possibly related: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=388382 There, the hardcoded lame switch '-x' causes breakage. Maybe what ails us is similar?
