Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Preamble: this issue is related to #207770 where it was mostly fixed;
however using a Radeon X600 with dual monitors still causes Compiz to
fail to load. Also, it seems others are having the same problem* with
varying types of hardware, but no-one has reported it as a new bug.

What happens: Compiz fails to load (see attached xsession-errors) with
the error: 'Checking screen 1Comparing resolution (3200x1200) to maximum
3D texture size (2048): Failed.' It then falls back to Metacity.

What should happen: Compiz or Gnome should work around the limitations
of graphics cards like any other software, or OS that supports
compositing (given that other OS' have no problems supporting large
desktops with wallpaper, Ubuntu should be no different).

Perhaps Gnome should split the wallpaper image and use two textures on
each desktop? Perhaps the image could be tiled by Compiz?
