One possible explanation could be that Ubuntu 9.04 uses old ntfs-3g driver. At least NTFS-3G Version 2009.3.8 is recommended. $ aptitude show ntfs-3g Package: ntfs-3g Version: 1:2009.2.1-0ubuntu2
